What does this question mean: If the “shining houses” represent the “new” and Mrs. Fullerton’s house represents the “old”, how does one’s perspective change when the house is the symbol of the occupants?

If the houses in the story are more than just houses, if they represent the people who live in those houses, does that give you another, deeper sense about those people? Does it add another layer to their character, to what happens in the story, to how it ends? Does it make you see or understand those people differently or better?
