There were metal vests available at the time that may have been somewhat effective at protecting soldiers. In general soldiers would not wear armor due to the weight. Neither the Union nor the Confederate armies issued any sort of armor to their soldiers. Traditional metal armors that had been used in the past were ineffective against bullets. Ballistic vests wouldn't be invented for roughly another hundred years.
