Hello, If you are interested in programming, you may start with "The Art of Computer Programming" by Donald Knut. Then try O'Reilly books depending on your interests.

@bruno TAOCP is a very tough book, especially for complete newcomers to CS :-P I don't know of any general introductory CS books; most folks begin with books that teach you how to program in a particular programming language (usually Java or C++) rather than program for the sake of learning CS. However, you can try the 6.00 introduction to computer science course on http://ocw.mit.edu (they have a study group here too) or http://cs50.tv ; both are excellent introductions to CS but both involve watching long videos and working on interesting problem sets. you can also try http://codeyear.com/ or sign up for http://cs101-class.org

I agree that the O'Reilly range can be very useful. The Developer's Library for individual languages is also fairly extensive, I'm going through Kochan's Programming in Objective-C and finding it quite easy to read. Another very useful tool if you have the time is to go through the Wiki pages online for specific topics, these can give you a rough outline and usually have a list of references that can then be sourced.
