25p^2-5p-2 factor the trinomial

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

my method is multiply the coefficient of p^2 by the constant.... 25 x -2 = -50 find 2 factors of 50 that add to - 5 ...... -10 and 5 so you have \[[(25p - 10)(25p + 5)]/25\] simplifying will give (5x - 2)(5x +1)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what happened to p^2?

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

oops should read (5p - 2)(5p +1)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but why do you have (25p-10)(25p+10)/25?

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

part of the method I use for solving difficult trinomials.... by doing that the next step is to simplify the numerator.. \[[5(5p-2)5(5p+1)]/25\] \[= [25(5p - 2)(5p+1)]/25\] cancel the 25s to get the answer

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay. one more question where did you get (5p+1)?
