What is the slope of the line passing through the point (3, −4) and perpendicular to the line y = 3x + 5? Write your answer as a fraction.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A slope perpendicular to another line has the opposite reciprocal of the other slope. So the slope here is 3 or 3/1, now we take the reciprocal of that (flip numerator and denominator) which is 1/3, and take the opposite of that (make it negative if positive, and positive if negative) which is -1/3 which is perpendicular to the slope of 3

OpenStudy (mertsj):

Slope of perpendicular = -1/3
