How would you differentiate kernel and micro kernel in operating systems..

From my understanding a kernel is part of the operating system that perfoms various tasks ..while a micro kernel is an approach of os where most tasks are performed in user mode in order to increase effeciency ...So evidentily the micro kernel is under the kernel how do you compare that is the main question...
