how do i cite an online source in-text?

It depends on the type of citation type. I'll use MLA as an example. So say I want to quote from Chinua Achebe's "Things Fall Apart", and I want to include the line "The drummers stopped for a brief rest before the real matches". What I would do is type out the quote and then at the end of the quote place (Achebe 48). So it will look like "The drummers stopped for a brief rest before the real matches" (Achebe 48). If I use another quote from the same author I only have to use the number in the parenthesis. In an essay, I would not use a quote like this. Never write "Island quotes", or quotes that stand by themselves. I would write Achebe mentions, "the drummers stopped for a brief rest before the real matches" (Achebe 48). Sorry for the brick of text.
