Their will to fight and defend Germany despite overwhelming odds. At the time, a number of Allied leaders believed that Germany was a defeated nation incapable of any serious threat. A number of German generals were against this battle but Hitler insisted on an offensive to split the lines and drive a wedge between the British and the Americans by taking the port at Antwerp. At the end, it only exhausted a large number of men and material depriving Nazi Germany of valuable reserves that could have been used to defend its borders from the Soviets. But it proved that the German army was far from "defeated".
