Well, its a continuous process because organisms constantly need energy.

If it stopped organisms would have no energy, and that will hinder the organisms ability to carry out its basic functions and eventually, die.

If it stopped organisms would have no energy, and that would hinder the organisms ability to carry out its basic functions and would rapidly lead to death.
