Elementary Statistics the histogrgram shows the distance of hurricanes that have hit the U.S. mainland by category, with 1 the weakest level and five the strongest. *find (a) mean (b)variance (c) standard deviation (d) expected value of the probablity distribution x= 1 2 3 4 5 P(x)=.399 .264 .260 .066 .011
a. OK, so the mean is the average, so start with finding the average of the five data points. what do you get?
1
is the mean right??
Well, you got the first step write. Now you have to divide 1 by 5 to get the average
so it will be 0.2
yep! so now the variance. The average of the squared differences from the Mean. To calculate the variance follow these steps: Work out the Mean (0.2) Then for each number: subtract the Mean and square the result (the squared difference). Then work out the average of those squared differences.
o ok
so (.399-.2)^2 + (.264-.2)^2 +... and then divide it all by 5.
While you work on that, I'm going to go eat dinner (also while the site restarts)
ok thank you for helping
I'll check back when I'm done to see if you need help
OK, how are you doing now?
