Isn't -2.25 +1.75 equal to -1.5?

OpenStudy (mertsj):

No.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Would you care to expound on that?

OpenStudy (mertsj):

Let's say you have a $1.75 and you want to buy something that costs $2.25. What is your deficiency as far as the money is concerned?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the difference, 50 cents

OpenStudy (mertsj):

There you go. -2.25+1.75=-.5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I know that 0.5 is the correct answer but every time I work it out I get -1.5. I still don't get it.

OpenStudy (anonymous):
