The perimeter of a rectangle parking lot is one-fourth of a mile. The length is 350 feet. on a map, the perimeter of the parking lot is 10 inches. what is the width of the parking lot on the map?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The actual length is 2290 feet... I think the length on the map would be 229 inches.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I dont think that's right. how did you get that answer?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

There are 5280 feet in a mile, subtract 700 (350 * 2) for two of the sides. remaining is 4580 feet, divide by two to find one of the lengths. the actual perimeter and the one on the map are proportional, so I divided 2290 by 10 (inches)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oops just realized one quarter of a mile sorry!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so 5280 divided four first.:/

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It's Okay.

OpenStudy (radar):

First convert the perimeter from 1/4 mi to feet. There is 5,280 feet in a mile so the perimeter is 1,320 feet. Now set up the proportion 10:1320 ::x:350 1320x=3500 x=2.65 in.

Thank you.
