8x^2+1/2x=2(2.5)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

8x^2 +1/2x = 2(2.5) We know that 2x2.5=5. So, 8x^2 +1/2x=5 Taking 2x in the denominator to the other side, we multiply it by 5 and the resulting number is 2x(5) = 10x. So, the equation is now 8x^2 +1 =10x Take 8x^2 + 1 -10x=0 Now this is a quadratic equation: 8x^2 -10x +1=0 We shall use the formula which says: \[-b \pm \sqrt{b ^{2}-4ac}/2a\] And substitute: -(-10) +/- square root(100-32)/16 10 +/- square root(68)/16 There are 2 cases to this: 10 + 8.24/16 where 8.24 is the square root of 68, and 10 - 8.24/16. The resulting answers are: 1.14, 0.16
