Databases are programs specifically designed to store and catalog information in a structured manner.
Operating Systems are software that run all of the core functionality of your computer.
Platforms are frameworks inside of which other applications can run.
Software pretty much covers all programs you run on your computer.

So, which category do all four fit into?

Well I thought that because of what you said above. ( helps other applications run) this is for my computer class. I know how computers and everything runs. I just don't know this kind of stuff.

Ahhhh... So to count as a platform - it would have to be a piece of software or a service whose *sole purpose* is to make other software run.

For example, the software that Facebook wrote to allow other websites to access data on your Facebook profile is a platform because it's sole purpose it to help other software that needs access to that data. Make sense?
