How are data structures implemented in assembly languages; what was life like without high level languages :(

Difficult. I remember programming assembly in the 80's and it was a b---- (I did get used to it though), but the performance gains over BASIC were worth it back then.

So if I want to learn how to implement stuff like linked lists and stacks and queues I should just use the -S argument and look at what GCC translates my C data structures into?
