Sam's plasma TV has a 14 in by 18 in screen with a plastic trim border. The total area of the TV and border is 480 in2. How wide is the trim around the TV?

OpenStudy (dumbcow):

first subtract the areas 480 - 14*18 = 228 Let x be width of trim trim can be divided into 4 rectangles plus the 4 square corners corner area = x^2 2 rectangles = 14x 2 rectangles = 18x -> 4x^2 +28x +36x = 228 4x^2 +64x-228 = 0 x^2 +16x - 57 = 0 (x+19)(x-3) = 0 **x must be positive** x = 3

make sense ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Shouldn't it be more since it's all around the T.V?

OpenStudy (dumbcow):

you are thinking length...it just wants how wide the trim is so its 3in. from edge of screen to edge of TV

OpenStudy (dumbcow):

the length or perimeter of the trim would be 18+18+14+14+3+3+3+3 = 76 in
