I am writing an essay on all types of media. here is my thesis: From fashion to hairstyles and being thin, media has influenced us to think differently and believe what most of the time turns out to be very debatable topics. What would be a good opening sentence for my intro paragraph
there are many tyoes of topics...
So before you can craft an opening sentence, you really have to have a sense of what else you want in that opening paragraph. That's the way it works in general. Certainly, that's the way it's going to work if you want to ask someone else to help you with that opening sentence. For you, since you've been thinking the topic over, you may have already had some ideas about how you might like to begin. For the thesis sentence itself, I can tell you that the phrase "being thin" is not parallel to "fashion" and "hairstyles." "Fashion" and "hairstyles" are nouns. You need another noun to complete the series. That's just structure. Then, in terms of the sense of the sentence, aren't hairstyles one aspect of fashion? Has the media influenced us to "think differently"? Think differently from what? And do we believe "topics"? That seems to be the wrong word. Not to worry, though. As you work with the essay, as you write down your initial thoughts and shape those thoughts, with each successive draft, into an increasingly more precise exploration of what it is you want to say, you will arrive at a better version of that thesis statement. Typically, students arrive at such a statement later in the process and put it towards the end, as they write their way into understanding better what it is they want to say. Often, it ends up (at first) as part of the conclusion. It takes only a bit of revision at that point to get it into the right position.
