why is penicilin completely useless for treating infections caused by fugi

OpenStudy (cathyangs):

...*not completely sure this is biology* I'm pretty sure penicilin IS an fungi, and I believe it cant last long enough in the human body to get rid of fungi...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

penicllin inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis. fungi do not have the same cell wall - hence it is useless against them

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Because it is an anti-biotic, meaning it can only kill bacteria. The pencillin is a fungus, itself. To kill fungus, you need an anti-fungal just like you need an anti-viral to kill viruses.
