|3x - 4| - 8 = 6

OpenStudy (anonymous):

solve for x?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think. The solution should have two answers

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ill try my best. [3x-4]= 6 +8.... 12x = 14............. x=14-12 .....x = 2?

OpenStudy (karatechopper):

yes you will have two solutions ons neg and one pos i think

OpenStudy (karatechopper):

i know one of them is 6, but not -6. u will need to set two cases up

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i was wrong. im sorry

OpenStudy (karatechopper):

its ok ya know..u showed your work good!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i think i was doing a differant kind of problem

OpenStudy (jamesj):

First because |3x - 4| - 8 = 6 we know that |3x - 4| = 14 --- (*) Now if 3x - 4 > 0, then |3x - 4| = 3x - 4, hence in that case the equation (*) implies 3x - 4 = 14 --- (1) On the other hand, if 3x - 4 < 0, then |3x - 4| = -(3x-4) = -3x + 4, and equation (*) implies -3x + 4 = 14 --- (2) So what you need to do now is solve each of the equations, (1) and (2)
