What is a function? And what are some examples?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

a function is a special type of relation that can be used to make predictions

OpenStudy (amistre64):

as a result; you do one thing, and can expect only one thing as a result

OpenStudy (amistre64):

a function from say: M to N maps all of the elements of M onto a unique element in N

OpenStudy (amistre64):

such that: x in M = f(x) in N

OpenStudy (amistre64):

|dw:1328663275052:dw|opps, not a function lol

OpenStudy (amistre64):

2 is not mapped and if we pick 1, do we get a single outcome? or do w ehave to choose?

OpenStudy (mertsj):

A function is a set of ordered pairs in which no two ordered pairs have the same first number.

OpenStudy (amistre64):

they can have the same first number as long as they have the same second number; but sets tend to be properly written such that you discard duplicates

thanks
