need help understanding Gauss's Law

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Each side was broken into equal segments (1cm apart) and the electric field was measured with the double prong prob running from the multimeter. The summation was performed to add up all the segments to find the flux. I just need help understanding why dA was replaced with dL. L=1cm. The calculation was Summation (E*L)
