Brittany is making a model boat and needs 4 pieces of string to rig the sails. Each piece of string needs to be 4/5 foot. She decides to cut the 4 pieces from a longer piece of string that is 15.2 feet in length. How much string will remain after Brittany cuts the 4 pieces of string?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A. 5 feet B. 12 feet C. 18.4 feet D. 10.4 feet

OpenStudy (radar):

This is just like the previous problem. Calculate how much Brittany is going to use 4 pieces each 4/5 ft long or a total of 16/5 ft or 3 1/5 feet or 5.2 feet. The piece that this is going to be removed from is 15.2 feet since this is in decimal units use the 5.2 feet 15.2-5.2 = 10 ft. I don't see this as a choice have you copied the choices correctly or I have goofed both are possibilities! lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

radar, I think your conversion from 3 1/5 to 5.2 feet is perhaps incorrect?

OpenStudy (radar):

I see my error it is 3.2 that i subtrtace from the 15.2 or 12 feet

OpenStudy (radar):

Yes joshusnoble2000 therein is the problem, I had a "senior" moment lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Haha. It happens to the young too. Embarrassingly often for this one.

OpenStudy (radar):

Yes indeed, I hope Kyrie is not ruined for life because of that mistake. How about Kyrie did you see where I goofed?

OpenStudy (radar):

3 1/5 =3.2 NOT 5.2 lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Lol you didn't ruin me. But lost me...Yes.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Lol I have no idea what the answer might be! D:

OpenStudy (radar):

Where are you at with this. Do you see how the amount used by brittany (total) is 3.2 ft.

OpenStudy (radar):

The answer is 12, but I want you to understand how to solve it. The first step it figure out how much Brittany used.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is the answer C?

OpenStudy (radar):

No it is B

OpenStudy (anonymous):

:O well darn..I still don't understand this! :'S

OpenStudy (radar):

Choice C of 18.4 ft is more string than was on the original piece The only had a 15.2 piece so you know the amount left after Brittany whacks off what she needs is going to be LESS than 15.2 ft.

OpenStudy (radar):

Kyrie, you must first figure the amount that Brittany is going to remove from the string. She is going to take off 4 pieces each 4/5 of a foot or 4 times 4/5. Does that seem reasonable?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes!

OpenStudy (radar):

So she would need to take off 4 times 4/5 or 16/5. That is 4 times 4/5|dw:1328722911488:dw|
