what is chromatin when it condesnses into chromosomes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Chromatin is the same thing in metaphase than anyother point in the cell cycle, it's DNA wrapped up round proteins called histones, with other regulatory proteins attached which are important for control of gene expression. It's just that the structure is more condensed when the chromatin packs into chromosomes and gene expression is less likely.
