viruses cant "make" anything on their own. they cannot synthesize proteins - such as growth factor for example.

True tom, but one can use recombinant techniques with viruses to get them to produce certain things after they take over the production capabilities of another cell. I can't think of tons off the top of my head, but I do know that some vaccines are made this way.
