If the substance's effect makes the lipid bi-layer of the inner mitochondrial membrane highly permeable to (H+) protons, would you loss weigh or gain weight and explain why.

OpenStudy (aravindg):

Hey, In living cells, 2,4-Dinitrophenol acts as a proton carrier, an agent that can shuttle protons (hydrogen ions) across biological membranes. It defeats the proton gradient across mitochondria, collapsing the proton motive force that the cell uses to produce most of its ATP chemical energy. Instead of producing ATP, the energy of the proton gradient is lost as heat - causing you to loss weight. Therefore... Causes weight loss

OpenStudy (aravindg):

did u get that?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Can you explain it a little better?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

aravind is rit as u knw if membrane is not highly permeable for H+ then the normal process goes and an proton motive force produce means when 3H+ moves from oxisomes the ATPsynthatase enzyme get active and ATP is formed now acc. to your ques if membrane get highly permeable then it dont goes through oxisomes as it can direct cross the membrane now so no proton motive force will from due to which ATP dont form now body needs energy so it starts utilising protein which result in weight loss
