can anyone help with geometry?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

If DB = 4 and DC = 6, find AD

OpenStudy (aroub):

(DB)^2=(AD)(DC) (4)^2=(AD)(6) 16=(AD)6 AD=8/3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

If DB = 4 and DC = 6, find AD

OpenStudy (anonymous):

can anyone help explain this one?

OpenStudy (aroub):

You have to find x and y ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I just have to find x, sorry about that.

OpenStudy (aroub):

Okay, no problem.

OpenStudy (aroub):

Do you know the theorems ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well, their posted on my home-schooling site, but I don't have them memorized. Should I?

OpenStudy (aroub):

Okay here is the theorem that will answer your second question : The altitude to the hypotenuse of a right triangle separates the hypotenuse into two segments such that the length of each leg of the triangle is the geometric mean of the lengths of the hypotenuse and the segment adjacent to that leg. 'x' is a leg right ? and what is the segment adjacent to that leg ? 4 and what is the lengths of the hypotenuse ? 4+5 = 9 "leg of the triangle is the geometric mean of the lengths of the hypotenuse and the segment adjacent to that leg." From that ^ you'll get : (x)^2=(4)(9) x^2=36 x=6

OpenStudy (aroub):

Of course! You have to memorize theorems.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wow, thank-you so much! you're much more helpful than my online teachers.

OpenStudy (aroub):

Haha, thank you! =DD
