Does anyone know what commodities means? E.G; I went to the department store to purchase commodities. How would you say commodities in that sentence?? HELP! kthanksbye xx

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Commodities means like something that can be bought or sold often applied to natural resources.

OpenStudy (jagatuba):

When you are speaking of purchasing commodities from the store, you are talking about goods that have no distinguishable factor from the same product from a different producer. This is called fungibility. An example of this would be milk. Milk from one dairy is indistinguishable from milk from another dairy, so it is a commodity. Other examples would be sugar, flour, bacon, orange juice, etc. Usually we do not call the items in the grocery store commodities. We just call them groceries or products. The word commodities is more commonly used in economics or in the investment industry. Commodities can be speculated on in the stock market.
