determine the value of the constant k for which the equation has equal root (that is only oe distinct root) x^2+2(k+1)x+k^2=0

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Is there a certain formula that goes with the constant k

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

use the descriminant.... b^2 - 4ac... equal roots the descriminant = 0 so (k+1)^2 - 4 x 1 x k^2 = 0. expand and simplify... you'll then have a quadratic that needs to be solved.. something like 1 + 2k -3k^2 = 0
