How did Enlightenment thinkers criticize religion?

I think they were criticizing the religion because of all the inequality. You should read Candide. It's awesome!

Voltaire's Candide - this one guy is brought up to believe that everything's great, but then he is kicked out of the palace and realizes the lies of religious leaders, etc.
