if the area of the base of a prism is multiplied by 10 while the height is kept constant, what is the effect on the volume?

OpenStudy (asnaseer):

Volume = Area of base x Height So, if the Area of the base is multiplied by 10, what will happen to the volume?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well wat r the height??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so the answer would be: expand?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thats wat i think.....maybe srry not really good at this

OpenStudy (asnaseer):

yes - and by how much? call the original area of the base A, and call the height h. Then: Volume = Ah now new area of base is 10 times old area, so new area (B) = 10B, so: New Volume = Bh = 10Ah

OpenStudy (asnaseer):

that should have been B = 10A up there!

OpenStudy (asnaseer):

so now compare the new volume to the old volume - by how much has it become bigger?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

10 times

OpenStudy (asnaseer):

bingo! - you got it - well done!
