Why is the scientific method a flexible guide?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The scientific method is based off methodical rationalism. In other words, it is about defining objectively what we can know, what we can observe, and what we can propose. Its flexibility is founded on its basis of critical thinking.

Scientific method is a type of thinking. For instance, common sense (which we're all familiar with) tells us that the fridge in our kitchen is still there even when we can't see it. There's no way for us to know this, but EVERY TIME we go into the kitchen we can observe that it's still there, so we can come to the conclusion that it stayed there. Now, this is all we need for average life duties. But, consider a scientist's job: s/he has to consider every possibility, so s/he can mathematically model the entire system. So s/he needs to methodically prove that the fridge isn't being removed and replaced every time s/he sees it. For the purposes of engineering, technology, and discovery, it's important to be able to perfectly describe the fridge's state at every point of time. Scientific method helps do this.
