What is meant by the characteristic property of matter?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A general property that all matter has. For example: Mass.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think it is a property of matter that can be directly used to identify it.For instance, a characteristic property of matter is its atomic mass. We can identify the atom directly. Weight is not a characteristic property of matter. Weight is dependent on acceleration.

I said mass, not weight. Atomic mass is specific to a particular element but just mass can be anything (elements, compunds etc).
