One volt is equal to

I amp flowing through 1 ohms resistor.

100 newtons 50 Joules 1 Joule/Coulomb 100 Coulombs

Alternatively and equivalently, it is also equal to the potential difference between two points 1 meter apart in an electric field of 1 newton per coulomb.

OpenStudy (jamesj):

From the definition I just gave 1 Volt = 1 Newton.Meter/Coulomb = 1 N.m/C. Now as 1 N.m = 1 Joule = 1 J, that means 1 Volt = 1 J/C.
