The process of digestion involves reducing the size of food particles until they are tiny enough for your small intestine to absorb. Your body's methods for decreasing food size include the mechanical action of chewing and the chemical action of your digestive enzymes. Reducing the size of food particles before you eat them -- by cutting your food into small pieces or even liquefying your meals -- can give you a headstart on the process of digestion. Also different enzymes break down proteins, carbs and fats.
