what is the difference between elment and compund?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

An element is made up of only one type of matter, divisible to a single atom with a unique number of protons, neutrons and electrons. A compound is made up of one or more elements. * Elements are the simplest forms of matter that can exist under normal laboratory conditions. Elements cannot be separated into simpler substances by chemical means. They are the building blocks for all other substances. Oxygen, hydrogen, and carbon are examples of elements * Compounds are substances that can be separated into simpler substances only by chemical means. There are a variety of chemical processes that can be used to separate compounds into simpler substances. Heating is one of these processes.
