You can assume in science and in Engineering you can never. Science has more theoratical and with some practical. But Engineering is always practical. If you build a bridge with assumption then think what'll happens next.

@arunbabu That is not entirely correct. Engineers make assumptions everyday. The key to engineering is to verify that a model represents the actual behavior of the system within the range of the operational parameters. Of course, engineering is more rigid than science, but $F=ma$ holds in both fields because Newton's Second Law is a very accurate model of real world systems.
