European guns were effective against Native populations
At first the Europeans were thought of as gods by Aztecs (not as much a factor as a fun fact)

europeans had a different view on land...mainly ownership.  So they took over land that seemed unoccupied or that didn't have clear title.
They had the attitude to conquer - C. Columbus, on discovering the local natives noted in his diary that a couple guys with guns could conquer the whole place.  Apparently, he was not the only one to come to this conclusion.
