you should also set one to 4x - 6 = -18 x = 6 is correct, but the other solution is x =-3

4x-6|-8=10 |4x-6|=18 4x - 6 = 18 OR 4x - 6 = -18 4x = 24 OR 4x = -12 x = 6 OR x = -3
