My guess would be that they only teach you the words/definitions, but not the grammar.

Online translators obviously are detrimental to your learning of another language because they do not make you actively think in the other language.

I have a good example that my freshman Spanish teacher gave to me. Try translating Jingle Bells from English to Spanish and from Spanish to English. You'll see that the words look a tad different.
