Example:

The compound was created to aid digestion and alleviate nausea (Johnson, Johnston, Tatenger, & Witting, 2009).

Note: the page numbers are only needed for direct quotes. If the number of authors exceed 6 only use the first author's last name and et. al.: (Johnson, et. al., 2009, p.p. 10-11). Also this is according the American Psychiatric Association Manual. If you use a different style guide consult that instead.
