1. give me example of a food chain with at least 3 organisms 2. tell me what is meant by carrying capacity 3. how does carrying capacity affect a population 4. think about two examples of things that you do each day that affects the environment around you.
Cubanita, it helps us help you understand the question (and the answer) if you tell us what specifically you don't understand about it...
i basicly dont understand any of it that y i was asking for help
OK, starting at the top, do you know what a food chain is?
A food chain is somewhat a linear sequence of links in a food web starting from a trophic species that eats no other species in the web and ends at a trophic species that is eaten by no other species in the web.
That's a very good textbook definition. But do you understand what it is?
yes i understand what a food chain is. :)
OK, so can you think of three animals (or other organisms) which are successive links in a food chain?
what does that mean?
You just told me (correctly) that food chains are sequences of organisms which eat each other. You told me that you understand this definition...
yes i do understand but idk wat exactly u are asking me
I'm asking you what the question is asking you. It wants you to think of three organisms such that the first organism is eaten by the second organism and the second organism is eaten by the third organism.
oh okay i understand now what u are asking me
a flower,a frog, n a snake can that work
I don't think frogs eat flowers. They eat insects. But snakes certainly do eat frogs.
oh im sorry. rat, snake and a hawk
Yes, that is absolutely a food chain.
so number 1 would be that
Yes. On to carrying capacity. Do you understand what carrying capacity means?
The carrying capacity of a biological species in an environment is the maximum population size of the species that the environment can sustain indefinitely, given the food, habitat, water and other necessities available in the environment.
Yes. Another textbook definition. Do you understand what it means?
not exactly
OK. The resources available to a species in any given region are limited. There is just so much food and habitat around and it can support just a limited population of a species. The carrying capacity is the most individuals which can live in a habitat while there is still enough resources for all of them. Clearer?
yes
Cool. So the question asks you what carrying capacity means. All you have to do is put your understanding of it in your own words.
oh okay that one is alot easier now after i understood it
The third question is very similar to the second: it asks you how the carrying capacity affects a population.
Clear, Cubanita?
Reproductive lag time is the time required for the birth rate to decline and the death rate to increase in response to resource limits.
Yes, but what has reproductive lag to do with the question?
im sorry
with more species in a population with little capacity there will be less birth and more dieing because of no food
Yes, exactly. And it occurs when the carrying capacity has been reached. Do you think you're ready to go on to the fourth and final question?
oh okay and yes im ready for the fourth and final question
Do you understand what it's asking you?
kind of but not exactly
It's asking you to think of two things you do affect the environment.
Why don't you take a couple guesses?
oh okay i will
hair styling products example hairspray
Hair spray isn't really part of the natural world. And you're giving an example of how it affects you, not how you affect it.
oh okay
Do you use electricity?
yes
littering, creating pollution cutting down trees
Well, electricity is generated from natural resources like fossil fuels. So as you use electricity, fossil fuels are converted to carbon dioxide which is released into the atmosphere. So for example, you affect the environment by using energy. And yes, littering (creating one kind of pollution) and cutting down trees (and using paper products which are made from cut down trees) are both good examples of how you affect the environment, too.
Cool?
yes thank you for your help i understand everything alot better
are you a teacher
No, I'm a scientist. I'm glad you understand everything now!
oh wow thank you so much
You're very welcome!
