The entire circumference is 2*Pi, so the 45 degree wedge is Pi/4 or about .79 miles. And, no, I'm not smarter than a 5th grader.

What you're looking for is the arclength between the ranger station and the pool. You can get the arc length with:\[L = \Theta r\] Where theta is the angle between the locations IN RADIANS and r is the radius. So \[L = \frac{\pi}{4}\times 1\text{ mile} = \frac{\pi}{4} \text{ miles}\]
