How do I install a pretty, functional desktop on my linux?

Look into the Compiz Window Manager. It's a little graphics intensive, but pretty.

I went with gnome and configured my xinit file for it. I like how linux lets you not only choose what desktop environment you like, but also lets you configure them to be as pretty as you like :)
