OpenStudy (aravindg):

please help ::what are octants how to determine which octant if we are given a random point (x,y,z)?

OpenStudy (dumbcow):

octants are just like quadrants except in 3-d 1st octant is all positive values 2nd octant, x neg, y pos, z pos 3rd octant, x neg, y neg, z pos 4th octant, x pos, y neg, z pos 5th octant x pos, y pos, z neg 6th octant, x neg, y pos, z neg 7th octant, x neg, y neg, z neg 8th octant, x pos, y neg, z neg hope i got them in right order

OpenStudy (aravindg):

oh can u say any trick to find the sign dor any random point i cant memorize this!!

OpenStudy (dumbcow):

just remember the quadrants: ++, -+, --, +- then think of it as 1 quadrant on top of another top quadrant has positive z bottom quadrant has neg z

OpenStudy (aravindg):

but hw do i get the quadrant no??

OpenStudy (dumbcow):

depends on the x and y values ?

OpenStudy (aravindg):

not that say if i get a point like (-3,4,-5) how will i say the octant no: directly??

OpenStudy (dumbcow):

(-3,4) is -+ so in 2nd quadrant z = -5 add 4 to get octant 4+2 = 6th octant |dw:1329470338004:dw| if z is negative, just add 4

OpenStudy (aravindg):

oh u mean in general we can get the first 4 octants easily as they are similiar to 2 cordinate axes and if we have z as negative then add 4 ??

OpenStudy (dumbcow):

yep i think that will work

OpenStudy (aravindg):

wow superb thx a lot i was preparing for an xam tmrw that really helps i wish i could giv u more than one medals!!

OpenStudy (dumbcow):

thanks :)
