OpenStudy (aravindg):

can anyone tell me any shortcut method to calculate the mean deviation from mean ??

OpenStudy (jamesj):

'mean deviation'? Are you asking about the standard deviation?

OpenStudy (aravindg):

it seems the method i know is tedious

OpenStudy (aravindg):

no mean deviation

OpenStudy (aravindg):

ya that is a long process

OpenStudy (aravindg):

i think there is a shortcut

OpenStudy (aravindg):

u see i got a shortcut for getting mean deviation about mean

OpenStudy (jamesj):

I don't know any shortcuts. Ask Zarkon about this, as this is his area.

OpenStudy (phi):

if you know the distribution, there might be a short cut, but not in general

OpenStudy (aravindg):

ooh!

OpenStudy (jamesj):

yes, I think phi is exactly right.

OpenStudy (aravindg):

what about standard deviation?do any of u hav a good article on these topics mine is so complicated

OpenStudy (aravindg):

this topic of maths is so boring honestly

OpenStudy (jamesj):

I think there's no escaping it. This is the thing about distributions. You need nearly always more than one parameter.

OpenStudy (aravindg):

hmmm

OpenStudy (jamesj):

Yes, the calculations are tedious though, I agree.

OpenStudy (jamesj):

This was my least favorite topic in high school mathematics also. Later on I realized stats was incredibly useful and powerful. But I think at HS level, too much emphasis is placed on calculation and not enough on understanding concepts.

OpenStudy (aravindg):

hmm thx ..lemme get back to study
