what is the significance of secondary growth in plants?

2dry growth increases girth of plant thus increasing its strength. second- in the 2dry growth the xylem is the main component which is produced by cambium and due to this it fulfill the demand of water caused by increased no. of leaves... after all the wood timber we use is the secondary xylem - result of the secondary growth.;-))
