OpenStudy (anonymous):

if -COOH group and -NH2 group are attached on same carbon then that type of amino acid are 1)aplha amino acid 2)beta amino acid 3)gamma amino acid 4)none of the above

OpenStudy (blues):

Alpha amino acids. Although most people think these are the only type of amino acids...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but they are on same carbon it it possible?

OpenStudy (blues):

Do you remember how many covalent bonds carbon forms?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes 4 bonds

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but i never read in amino acid both group n same carbon

OpenStudy (blues):

So it can bond with up to four different molecules. One of these four is the -COOH group. Another is the -NH2 group. Another of these four is a single side chain -R and the fourth and final is a hydrogen atom -H. It's called an alpha amino acid because there is only one central carbon between the -COOH and the -NH2 in the backbone. If there were two central carbons between the -COOH and -NH2 groups, it would be a beta carbon. Clear?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes yes we call it chiral carbon i made a illy mitake on xam i marked 4) as i thought how can be both on same cabon if it i then we cannot talk abu N-terminal etc :( well thnx last qn nw wait i m potsing
