Find the x- and y-intercepts of the graph of the equation: -2x - 2y = 0

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (aroub):

Can you do this one?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I cant really do any of them. I'm new at this

OpenStudy (aroub):

If you want to find the x-intercept you susbstitute y by 0 and if you want to find the y-intercept you substitute the x by 0

OpenStudy (anonymous):

this is all so confusing

OpenStudy (aroub):

Hmmm, what don't you understand from what I said above?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the whole graphing these point and all the susbstituting. I have an hr left and I'm going to fail this test

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if you fail now you can always do better next time..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Not if I dont know what i'm doing This class is the last class I need for my Bachelors

OpenStudy (aroub):

You'll not graph in this question. I'm trying to help you solve this question on your own.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i just have no idea what to do

OpenStudy (aroub):

It's easy. All you have to do is SUBSTITUTE this is the most easiest thing in math. You have : -2x - 2y = 0 In order to find the x- intercept just put instead of y zero : -2x-2(0)=0 -2x=0 x=0 (0,0) You're going to do find the y-intercept. In order to find the y-interecpt put instead of x zero.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so the 2y will turn into 20?

OpenStudy (aroub):

no

OpenStudy (aroub):

you're going to multiply 2 by zero

OpenStudy (aroub):

because 2y = 2(0)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so 0?

OpenStudy (aroub):

Yes :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So I would do that for x too?

OpenStudy (aroub):

but wait you want to find the y-intercept so you only susbstitute the x by zero not the y

OpenStudy (aroub):

=> -2x - 2y = 0 -2(0)-2y=0 now solve it..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Why is it saying x- and y-

OpenStudy (anonymous):

whats the - for?

OpenStudy (aroub):

We already found the x-intercept you can't find them both at the same time

OpenStudy (aroub):

I don't know it's just a dash..

OpenStudy (aroub):

Don't worry about it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

why cant i find them both at the same time?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so it would be answer D?

OpenStudy (aroub):

Because you won't get an answer! It would look like this : -2x - 2y = 0 -2(0)-2(0)=0 0-0=0 0=0 Did you find x or y-intercept? No. And yep :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No and yep?

OpenStudy (aroub):

lol nevermind. Yes the answer is D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You still going to help? I have more

OpenStudy (aroub):

Sure!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

D?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

y = 5x

OpenStudy (aroub):

Yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

turn y to 0= 5(0) (0,0)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and x to 0?

OpenStudy (aroub):

Sorry, I didnt understand...

OpenStudy (aroub):

You mean that the answer is not D ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think it is D

OpenStudy (aroub):

Yes it is

OpenStudy (anonymous):

That one was just like the last one

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok next one

OpenStudy (aroub):

Can you post the other one there <----

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm not sure how. its a file

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how do I attach it to there

OpenStudy (aroub):

Don't worry about it just keep it here

OpenStudy (anonymous):

k

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x = 2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i have no idea on this one

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think its B

OpenStudy (aroub):

It's A

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh shoot

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I was thinking there was an x and y and it would be 0,0 again

OpenStudy (aroub):

No

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (aroub):

What do you think?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So on this one. y is 0 = -2 so the answer would be B?

OpenStudy (aroub):

Exactly :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeaaaaaaaa

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-6 - x =0

OpenStudy (anonymous):

not sure how to do this one

OpenStudy (aroub):

-6 - x =0 solve for x -x=6 x=-6 and remember x is a vertcal line so the answer is...?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

c

OpenStudy (aroub):

Yup :D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so why is x the veritcal line

OpenStudy (aroub):

always x is vertical and y is horizontal

OpenStudy (anonymous):

on this attachment its showing that y is the vertical line

OpenStudy (aroub):

I realized that! I have no idea why though.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I only have 10 min left on this test that i'm going to fail because I dont have enough time left for the remaining 15 questions. I can take it again for a better score. I have a total of 25 questions. Would it be too much to asked if you could help me through them?

OpenStudy (aroub):

Sure..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

great. your a life saver

OpenStudy (aroub):

You're going take it again or you're going to continue?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

take it again

OpenStudy (aroub):

ok I'll be back like in 10 min

OpenStudy (aroub):

lunch is ready

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok great. can you let me know?

OpenStudy (aroub):

ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you

OpenStudy (aroub):

I'm back.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Determine which ordered pairs are solutions for y = 5x - 4 A. (0,-5) B. (0,-4) C. (2,-6) D. (4/5,0)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it wont let me copy and paste this time and i'm only getting an 1 45 min

OpenStudy (aroub):

Okay lets do this fast! I have to go in a a bit =(

OpenStudy (anonymous):
