Okay simple example: Lets use the example of you driving a car down a straight bit of road. Now you can tell how fast you're going (speed) by looking at the speedometer and you know what direction your going say by looking at a compass mounted on your dash board. Well the speed at which your going at is like the magnitude of a vector and the direction you are going is the direction at which your car is going, say due north . Does that help?
