So first we can move the 5 to the right side of the equation: |m+4| = 24 so |m+4| must equal 24. In other words the left side must equal 24. Okay? There are two ways this is true: Case 1: m=20 so |20 +4| = |24| = 24 Case 2: (The stuff in the absolute value sign can be equal to negative 24) m= -28 so |-28 +4| = |-24| = 24 ---------------------------------------------------------- So we have m= 20 OR m= -28
